Entering his 10th year with Union FC Indy, Dan Kapsalis is a cornerstone of the club’s leadership team. As the Director of Operations, Dan wears many hats, seamlessly driving the club's success while also serving as a Coaching Director, Events Director, Camp Director, and Rec Director. With over 40 years of experience as a coach and administrator, and a lifelong dedication to the sport, Dan’s impact on the Indiana soccer community is unparalleled.
A Legacy of Leadership and Development
Dan’s administrative and executive experience runs deep across the state. From 2000 to 2005, he served simultaneously as the Deputy Executive Director of Indiana Youth Soccer, the State Coaching Director for Indiana Soccer, and the Director of State Olympic Development and Coaching Education. During this time, he also served as an ODP State Coach and Midwest Regional Coach (1986–2005).
A proven club builder, Dan was the Founder, President, and Director of Coaching for Indianapolis United from 1990 to 2000, leading U14–U18 boys' teams to an incredible 16 State Championships. He later served as the Coaching Director at USAi (2009–2013) and as Co-Founder and Coaching Director for the Indy Phoenix Soccer Club (2013–2020).
Coaching and Playing Excellence
Dan brings over four decades of coaching experience at both the club and high school levels, having coached in over 1,000 games. As a high school coach, he led the boys' programs at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School (1989–1992) before establishing a dynasty at Carmel High School (1993–2006). At Carmel, Dan guided the team to 25 team championships, four State Championship appearances, and an undefeated State Championship season in 2006, ending the year ranked #1 in the country. His tactical expertise has earned him Coach of the Year honors an astounding 34 times across the state, regional, and national levels.
His coaching philosophy is rooted in a highly successful playing career. Dan boasts 35 years of playing experience—spanning youth, high school, collegiate, and men's amateur levels across Chicago, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Detroit, and Indianapolis—and has stepped onto the pitch for over 1,000 games. Most notably, he is a two-time NCAA Division I National Champion, having earned his spot as a walk-on for the legendary Indiana University Men’s Soccer Team (1982–1984). Dan currently holds every State-level Coaching License, as well as the US Soccer National B and National Youth Coaching Licenses.
Awards, Recognition, and Broadcasting
Dan’s lifetime of dedication to the game has been widely recognized. In 2010, he earned dual inductions into both the Indiana Soccer Hall of Fame and the Indiana High School Coaches Hall of Fame. He is also the recipient of Indiana Youth Soccer's “Good of Soccer” Lifetime Achievement Award (1997) and the ISCA President’s Award for his longtime service to high school soccer (2006).
Beyond the touchline, Dan is a familiar voice to soccer fans. For over 30 years, he has served as a TV and radio color analyst, previously calling matches for the Indiana Blast and Twisters. He currently serves on the broadcast team for Indy Eleven, delivering expert commentary on ESPN+ and CBS Sports Golazo.
